How to Fix Scratches on a Car

When there’s a scratch on your car, and you don’t want to bring it to our dealership near Grand Island or pay to have our service team buff it out, here are some DIY techniques to fix scratches on a car.

  • Wash Your Car – Before you do anything, thoroughly wash your car.
  • Candle Wax – Candles wax isn’t a permanent solution, but it will help in an emergency. Gently rub the candle wax over the cleaned area to fill the scratch and seal it.
  • Super Glue – Super glue can also help seal the scratch temporarily and it blends with the car, slightly masking the scratch.
  • Paint Polish or Rubbing Compound – When dealing with a car’s paint, we at Tom Dinsdale Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram recommend using the least aggressive solution first. If you underdo it, you can do more, but if you overdo it, you can’t go back. So, we recommend using a light, less abrasive foam pad first and slowing working up to higher-grit polishes if needed. If polishing doesn’t fix the scratches on your car, try wet-sanding.
  • Wet Sandpaper – If the scratches on your car are just on the surface, you can likely fix it by cleaning the area and rubbing it with 2000-grit wet sandpaper. When you get to the point where the scratch is almost gone, apply a rubbing compound, and then use a finer polish. Finish with car wax or paint sealant for protection
  • Touch-Up Paint: You can find touch-up paint at most parts stores or the Tom Dinsdale Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram parts center, near Kearney.

DIY Fixes for Dents

Now, let’s cover how to fix a small dent in a car. Try any of the following:

  • Plunger – Whether it’s your bathroom plunger or a bonafide car dent plunger, a plunger can help pop the dent out.
  • Hammer or Mallet – Using a hammer or mallet on the opposite side of the dent might help knock the spot back into place. Use a hammer for fixing a small dent in your car and the mallet for larger dents. Cover the side you are hammering with a towel or rag, so you don’t cause more damage.
  • Dent Puller – A dent puller is always an option, but only if you’re used to using one because it requires drilling a hole in the dent, feeding the wire through the hole, and pulling the dent back to where it should be. Then you’ll need to fill the hole, sand it down, and paint it.
